AG Hair Cosmetics Colour Care Deflect and BB Cream Reviews

As y'all know, I regularly color my hair. I think it's extremely important to use products that will protect your color (and the hair too!).

That's where AG Hair Cosmetics Colour Care line comes in. They are introducing two new products to the line: Deflect, Fast-Dry Heat Protection spray and BB Cream, Total Benefit Hair Primer.

Here is what the bottles say about the products:

First up, the Deflect spray. It will run $24. It claims to protect hair during heat styling and will "dramatically" reduce drying time. The "light" reduces breakage and give smoothness to hair.

I'm going to be completely blunt with this one but I didn't see any of that happen. I was hoping it would at least speed up dry time but it didn't at all. Everything else, I didn't see happen either.

Now on to the BB Cream. This one will be $26. It claims to moisturize and smooth, thicken the hair cuticle and protect against fading and styling tools.

I think this did a nice job at hydrating my hair. The thickening qualities just were not there for me.

Overall, I think these are fairly average products. I think it's absolutely necessary to use heat protectants and hydrating products in your hair. Unfortunately, I do not think these will be the ones that make a regular appearance in my routine.

Both of these products will be available in salons starting March 1, 2014. I typically see this brand at Ulta.

Hask Henna 'n' Placenta Conditioning Treatment Review

If you read yesterday's hair disaster post, you will know I thought this Hask Henna 'n' Placenta Conditioning Treatment was amazeballs.

Usually, I wouldn't post a review of something so soon after using but this made that much of an impression on me.

When I was trying to fix my carrot top debacle, I knew I was going to put my hair through some serious doo doo that would need a protein rich deep conditioner. That's where this Henna 'n' Placenta packet came in. I picked it up at Sally Beauty for $2.79 but it looks like you can also get it at Walmart  98¢ (personally, I have never seen it there but hey the website says it's there).

So what in the heck is it???

The packaging says:

An extra-rich super strength formula combining two of nature's most complete hair conditioning: neutral henna and natural placenta. Super Strength Henna 'N' Placenta Conditioning Treatment quickly repairs and strengthens dry, brittle, lifeless hair without changing the color.

This is not human placenta. It is animal placenta. It says it's an environmentally responsible formula and was not tested on animals.

What I liked:
  • Kept my hair from becoming a disaster
  • Smell is nice
  • Enough for multiple uses in one packet

What I wasn't in to:
  • Price at Sally but this will be remedied by going to Walmart

When I tested this out, I had used a color remover and dye on my hair. After each step, I slathered on this product, left it in my hair for 10 minutes and sat in front of the fireplace (it says to heat if possible). My hair was left completely nourished and soft. I firmly believe this product is what kept my hair from becoming fried. When I went to the salon to have my hair colored the very next day the stylist was also surprised my hair wasn't straw like.

Needless to say, this deep conditioner is an absolute win for me. Holy Grail status win. Since my hair is on the road to recovery, now, I'm going to be using the hell out of this stuff. I have never had such excellent results from a deep conditioning treatment.

It Only Took $200 to Learn...

...that my hair has zero desire to be light.

One thing I may have not shared on here is at one time I was a blonde (this was a very short lived period of time).

Since then, I have basically been varying shades of dark brown (trust me, they're not that varying). There was also that one time, a few years ago, I had disastrous highlights.

This time, I thought I could do light brown. I thought, there's no way my hair wouldn't want to be light brown -_-

My pin-spiration

I went to the salon and she wanted to go the highlighting and toning route. I figured this would be the only way, too. Unfortunately, all of my highlights pulled orange and/or brassy (that has honestly never happened before).

Since I am a DIYer (and cheap as all get out), I went to the internets for my solution. I knew, ultimately, I needed to get the old dye out of my hair (not the bleach, the dark browns I had colored over the years). I was torn between doing bleach shampooing or using a color removing system. Since my hair was already beat, I went with the latter.

I had two choices at Sally Beauty, One 'n Only Color Fix or L'oreal Color Zap. There seemed to be better reviews on Color Fix so I picked that up along with my favorite dye brand, One 'n Only Argan Oil Hair Color. I also knew I was going to need a protein rich deep conditioner so I went with the strangely titled, Henna 'n' Placenta Conditioning Treatment.

It would be easy they said. You could do it yourself they said. Then, I ended up with this sh*t:

I wish I had a better photo for you all but I really didn't want much evidence of this around. It was orange and patchy in person. I looked like a hot mess. My husband was actually afraid to say anything because it was so bad. When I told him I was going to the salon to get it fixed, he was relieved.

Mistake #1 Color Fix DID NOT WORK for me and it smelled like rotten eggs. My whole house stunk and I caught whiffs of it on my hair for days. After I washed it out, there was zero difference in my hair. I know it's not meant to lighten anything but it honestly did nothing. Had it, my hair would not have been orange.

Mistake #2 I chose a dye that was too light. I should have went with a level 5.

But the win in all of this is that the placenta stuff is amazeballs. Review coming tomorrow.

I thought about trying to fix it myself again but thought I've already screwed this up enough. Since I have been a long time fan of Aveda, I called around to see which salon could get me in. Lucky for me there was one. My hair responds very well to Aveda's dyes. Now I'm back to original dark brown shade.

$200 later and the lesson is learned...my hair has no desire to be anything but dark brown. I would say the past two highlighting jobs are serious indicators of that. I think the only reason my hair went blonde the first time was because it was on virgin hair. I'm going to be working on growing my hair out to get that virgin hair back so I can stop dying it for good. A chop might be in my future...

Pretty Little Beauty Swap

Every once in a while, I see an opportunity to join a beauty swap. Basically, you are paired with someone and you send one another products.

I saw the Pretty Little Beauty Swap and immediately signed up. This one is hosted by Southern Beauty Guide, Sleepy Single Girl and Hairspray & Highheels. I was partnered with Rainy Days and  Rubber Ducks. Here is what she sent me:

I'm excited to try the Sally Hansen Sugar Shimmer, as I have not had the pleasure yet. I also love the travel size hairsprays. Those are always nice for summer vacays!

If you want to see what everyone else received, here is the link-up. If you ever have the opportunity to join a beauty swap, I encourage it!

Her Fashion Box Review

PR Sample

In the past couple of years, we have seen an influx of subscription boxes hit our homes. Another one is launching in the US, Her Fashion Box.

This box will run you $39.95 per month with free shipping. It claims to have over $110 worth of product in each delivery. The boxes include 3 "on-trend" accessories and 4 "deluxe" beauty samples. You can choose between a classic, feminine or trendy box. They also have the option of subbing to a "mini-box" for $24.94/mo with $60 worth of product. You may cancel at any time.

I received a one month sub to the box. Here is what was included:

High-Voltage Clutch $29.95//Flashback Scarf $24.95//Wrapped in Chains Bracelet $24.95//Androgychic ID Bracelet $29.95//Eyelash Curler ??//Urban Rituelle Soothing Body Balm $6.50//Ulta3 Matte Lipstick $3.95//Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Medium $8.99

What I liked:
  • Price is on point for the number of products
  • Packaging is very cute (leopard tissue paper!)
  • Nice mix of fashion and beauty products

What I wasn't into:
  • The quality of the products was sub-par
  • This did not fit my style whatsoever

I might be being harsh, but you guys, I am not impressed by this box.

First, I was shocked to discover that the holographic bag was a clutch (I thought it was a makeup bag). It's cumbersome and lays poorly. The accessories are Forever 21 quality. My eyes bulged when I saw they were $25-$30. Having said that, I do like the scarf's pattern.

As for the beauty items, I consider "deluxe" to mean high end brands, which obviously none of these are. I was also sent the BB cream in medium, which I will never be dark enough to pull off. The lipstick shade is nice and I can always use a small lotion in my travels. The eye lash curler is, again, fairly low quality.

To be honest, had I subscribed to this box myself, I would have been pretty peeved that I paid 40 bucks for it and would have cancelled immediately. The only items I kept for myself was the scarf and lotion. Everything else, I divvied out to my friends.

I'm not sure which style of box I received but it appears to be the "trendy" box. Perhaps the classic or feminine box would fit me better but the quality of product would have to improve for me to be happy with it.

If you're looking for other reviews, Phyrra was much more into my box than I was. You can read her post here.

Briogeo Cleansing Shampoo and Deep Conditioning Mask Review

PR Sample

Since I regularly color my hair, I try to use products that keep it from drying out. I especially love to deep condition. Briogeo reached out to take a look at their Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask. They also sent along their Be Gentle, Be Kind Cleaning Shampoo.

Briogeo Cleansing Shampoo and Deep Conditioning Mask

Briogeo's philosophy is:

“every woman should have beautiful, healthy hair without sacrificing safe and nurturing ingredients.”

They create products that are sulfate, paraben and silicone free. Their products include ingredients like avocado, argan oil and green tea.

Briogeo Cleansing Shampoo and Deep Conditioning Mask

First up, the Be Gentle, Be Kind Cleansing Shampoo. An 8.5 oz bottle runs $19 and can be purchased from online retailers. It claims to cleanse and nourish scalp.

What I liked:
  • My hair was fully cleansed and clean
  • Did not weigh down my hair
  • Ingredients

What I wasn't into:
  • It took a lot (at least a quarter size or more) of product to spread across my entire scalp

Overall, I think this is a nice shampoo but it doesn't work any better than my drugstore favorite.

On to the Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask. In this one, you get 5.25 oz for $26. Again, it can be purchased from online retailers. It touts that it will repair dry, damaged hair.

What I liked:
  • My hair felt very soft and nourished after use
  • Ingredients

What I wasn't into:
  • Price

Overall, I think this is an average deep conditioner. Like the shampoo, it does not work any better or worse than my drugstore favorites. Due to the price, it is very unlikely I would pick this up in the future. Particularly since my favorite deep conditioner runs about $7 and works just as well, if not better.

Both of these products are nice but fairly average. If you prefer brands that are formulated without certain ingredients and enjoy natural based lines, I think you will appreciate what Briogeo has to offer.

Color Secrets Pro Nail Polish Review and Swatches

PR Sample

If you have seen my Busy Girl Nails posts, you know I love to paint my nails. I change up the colors or try new designs weekly. I'm always on the hunt for a new polish to try.

When Color Secrets reached out to me to try their vegan nail polishes, I was looking forward to testing their formula. It's not everyday a company makes vegan products.

The bottles are $3.99 each and come in creams, shimmers, mattes and sheer shades. I noticed they are all named after movie titles, which I find fun. You can find this line at select Walgreens.

Here is what Color Secrets has to say about their line:
  • 100% Vegan - no animal derived ingredients
  • 3-Free - no dibutyl phthalate, toluene, or formaldehyde
  • Cruelty free
  • Made in the USA
  • 144 brilliant shades

I tried out Love Actually and Notebook:

Love Actually

Love Actually is a red with a hint of shimmer while Notebook is a hot pink cream shade.

What I like:
  • Vegan formula
  • Shades are opaque within a coat or two
  • Price
  • Great shade selection
What I wasn't into:
  • Wear time is lagging

Masque Bar by Look Beauty Pore Refining Crème Mask Review and Results

Sponsored Post

I am a big fan of masking. I do at least one every single week. I find that they help my acne prone skin clear up and leave my skin feeling fresh.

I have a few large pores on my cheeks (nearest my nose). Plus, my pores are like clogged pipes. When Look Beauty reached out to me about their Masque Bar products, I immediately went for the Pore Refining Crème Masque for obvious reasons.

Look Beauty Masque Bar Pore Refining Creme Mask

A box of 4 masks will run you $9.99. They can be picked up at Target stores. You can also get more info on their other masks here. Each packet contains an ample amount of cream product. I found that they could almost be stretched out to two uses each.

Look Beauty Masque Bar Pore Refining Creme Mask

Look Beauty claims that the masks will minimize the look of pores, exfoliate, moisturize and smooth.  The package also points out that skin will look more balanced and radiant.

Look Beauty Masque Bar Pore Refining Creme Mask

How I use it:
  1. Wash and tone my face.
  2. Leave my skin a little bit damp.
  3. Apply the entire packet and allow it to set for 15-20 minutes.

What I liked from my experience:
  • This is the smoothest, silky soft mask I have ever used!
  • My skin appears squeaky clean after.
  • Skin is smooth.
  • Cleans out my pores.
  • Brings budding pimples to the surface to get rid of.
  • Pores appear slightly smaller.
  • No breakouts or adverse reactions.

What I'm not into:
  • It takes a lot of splashes of water to completely remove all the product.

My skin has been very happy with the mask. I cannot emphasize enough how silky soft this is during application. It's like rubbing baby bunnies on your face. As it dries, it tingles a bit. While it does tighten up, it doesn't make your face stiff as a statue. I was happy with how bright and clean my skin looked. I was also happy with how well it cleaned up my pores.

Maskcara IIID Foundation & HAC Pack Review

At the end of last year Cara, of Maskcara, launched her own makeup line. I was thrilled for her and in the spirit of supporting a fellow blogger, I picked up the line.

I was quite excited to try this out. I watched her videos and read her posts prior to ordering. I felt like I knew the ins and outs of it.

If you desire the entire HAC Pack (foundation, blush and illuminator) it will run you $47. Each piece can be purchased individually as well. The shipping was lightening fast and reasonable. You can purchase here

The premise behind this line is to be able to do your highlighting and contouring (or as she calls HAC-ing) all with one palette. I often use two different shades of foundation, so I thought it was a brilliant idea to have a ready made palette for HAC-ing.

The packaging is fairly simple. The foundation is in a plastic container that is about the size of an iPhone. The blush and illuminator come in lipgloss tubing with a foam applicator.

Maskcara IID Foundation in Light

I ordered the foundation in light. It comes with a contouring shade and a highlighting shade. When I first opened it, I thought for sure that contour shade would be way too dark. Fortunately, this is not the case.

I enjoyed the finish and how it looks on my skin. The shades are also a perfect match for me. I also love that there are yellow tones in this formula.

Unfortunately, this foundation is extremely difficult to meld into the skin. I used Cara's preferred brush to apply (the IT Cosmetics dual ended foundation/concealer brush) but this just caused the foundation to sit on top of my skin. I felt like I was putting a ton of product on the brush to get any coverage. It also transferred to anything that touched my face. The longevity leaves quite a bit to be desired. I had to reapply about 2-3 hours in (even with a primer).

Luckily, I had read 15 Minute Beauty's review. I had a very similar experience to her. I tried her method of applying the foundation and it improved my experience. However, it's way too much work to get the foundation in. I have to stipple, buff, beautyblend and use the warmth of my hands just to make it appear skin like. Even then, the longevity and transfer properties were the same.

The foundation also settles into fine lines and dry patches. I think if you have oily skin, you may like this a whole lot better than dry gals out there. It does an average job at covering acne and under eye circles. If you have a lot of acne, though, I do not think this is going to work well for you. This is one of those foundations you would reach for on a great skin day.

Maskcara IIID Illuminator

I quite liked how this illuminator looked on the skin. It blends easily and catches the light quite well. Unfortunately, it very quickly disappears into the skin and is gone within about an hour.

Maskcara IIID Cream Blush in Princess Peach

Can we talk about how gorgeous this shade is? It truly is the perfect blush color. Upon application, it worked into the skin beautifully and gave me the flushed look I desire. Once it dried, though, it was completely gone! I was all "where the heck did you go?"

Overall, I am completely disappointed with this line. I wanted so badly to love this and promote the hell out of it for Cara. I am sad it did not turn out how I imagined. When I watched Cara apply it to her own skin, I was thrilled with the results. Unfortunately, on me, the same does not happen.

All of the shades are right on point, so this line has that going for it. The formulation needs some improvements, though.

I am so sad this did not turn out better. I really hope she works out the kinks to make this a better experience.

Get Your Date Night Look with #WalgreensBeauty

I am a member of the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community.  This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for Collective Bias and its advertiser.

With Valentine's Day quickly approaching, it's time we put on our red lips and go out on the town. I'm sharing my makeup tips and date night look using all drugstore brands from Walgreens.

I made a stop by my local Walgreens and went to the makeup aisle. At my stores, the aisle is always right by the door! Walgreens frequently has B1G1 50% off sales, so I'm able to get my makeup at a discount (which is a plus for this frugal girl).

Now on to the date night look!

Since it is the red time of year, I chose to make a red lip the focus of this date night look. When you sport a red lip, it's important that you are selective in the products you chose to compliment it.

CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous Foundation: If you're going all in on a red lip, it's important your skin look flawless. That's why I reach for this foundation. It has buildable coverage that lasts all night.

Maybelline Expert Wear Duo in Dusk: I find it best to pair a red lip with a brown smoky eye. That's where this duo comes in. The tones are easy to work with and well pigmented.

Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Lip Color in Cherry On Top: Who wants to reapply lip color all night? I sure don't. This lippie blends bold red color with hours of staying power.

I kept the rest of my look fairly simple going for a light wash of color on the cheeks and went easy on the eyeliner.

All of the other products I used are brands that can be found at #WalgreensBeauty:
  • Revlon Nearly Naked Pressed Powder
  • Revlon PhotoReady Bronzer
  • Physicians Formula Happy Booster Blush
  • Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner
  • L'oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara
  • CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous Foundation
  • Maybelline Expert Wear Duo in Dusk
  • Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Lip Color in Cherry On Top

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure

PR Sample
Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure

I was selected for the Influenster Sally Hansen VoxBox.  This set contained 3 of the Complete Salon Manicure polished. Sally Hansen claims these have 7 benefits:
  • Base coat
  • Strengthener
  • Growth Treatment
  • Color
  • Top Coat
  • Chip Resistant
  • Gel Shine Finish
Here are swatches of the 3 colors I tried out:

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Red My Lips
Red My Lips
Pat On the Black
Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Jaded
What I liked:
  • The brush is wide and curved. This made for easly application.
  • No need for a top coat, my nails were nice and shiny.
  • After 7 days, I barely had any chips (except for on my dominate hand).
  • Opacity

What I didn't like:
  • The shine fades within a day.
  • Jaded (the last shade) takes 3+ coats to become opaque.
  • I didn't see any difference in the strength or growth of my nails.

Overall, I was very happy with the opacity and wear time with this polish. It was nice to not have to worry about a base and top coat. I could just paint and go.

Clearasil #WinTheDay Daily Clear Review

Sponsored Post

As many of you know, 2013 was the year of me getting control of my cystic acne without prescriptions products.

I had been in a clear skin groove for months-until recently. I have been trying a lot of new products lately and there was one my skin clearly did not agree with. Enter, cystic acne eruption of 2014. I knew I was going to have to attack this breakout stringently.

Around the same time as this debacle, Clearasil reached out for me to try their Daily Clear line. I have been testing out their Refreshing Superfruit Scrub, Wash and Pads. I was hoping this products would be my attack forces.

Clearasil Daily Clear

Here is what Clearasil has to say about their line:

"Clearasil Daily Clear Refreshing Superfruit contains a blend of raspberry & cranberry extracts, known for their antioxidant properties, Vitamin B3 and blemish prevention." -from the Clearasil website

Immediately, I noticed the amazing scent. At first, I thought it was strawberries but once I read the bottle I realized there definitely is a cranberry hint. I have been using the wash at night to remove my makeup then treating with the pads before bed. During my morning shower, I have been using the scrub.

Clearasil Daily Clear

I noticed my eruptions stopped growing when I began using. Within a few days their size had dwindled. My non-cystics spots were gone within a day or two of use. I'm also very happy that this products have not been drying out my skin (particularly since it's already dry from this winter air!).

If you would like to try out Clearasil for yourself, they are offering a free rebate! You can find it here.

philosophy loveswept Fragrance Review

Sponsored Post

Recently I ran out of all of my favorite scents at the same time (they were obviously a plotting against me). Since I have used the same scents for years I thought it was time I change it up but I wasn't sure to what. I'm a picky gal when it comes to my perfumes.

A few days after the great fragrance debacle of 2014, POPSUGAR reached out to me to try out philosophy's new loveswept perfume.

Since I am so picky about my scents, I was a little concerned that I could end up going bleh! about this one. Luckily, this was not the case!

philosophy loveswept

Here is what philosophy has to say about the fragrance:

"A vibrant, feminine, romantic and youthful fragrance. by definition, loveswept is about energy and emotion, following your heart and seeing where that can take you and that is the sentiment that philosophy seeks to achieve."

A full sized 2 oz bottle runs $46. You can find it on philosophy's website here or at specialty stores. The fragrance is housed in a glass container with a spray applicator.

philosophy loveswept

loveswept follows the bright, crisp scent that most of philosophy's fragrances emit. The floral scents are light and sultry. There are hints of spicy undertones as well (all of these are a major plus for me!).

The scent made me think of the Luxemburg Gardens in Paris:

Overall, I'm very happy with loveswept. Plus, it's nice to change up my signature fragrance to something new.

philosophy is also having a sweepstakes where you could win a trip for 2 to Paris! You can enter here.
